The 20 Worst Foods in America

What are we really eating folks? Seriously. I mean, I know I don’t have the best diet in the world but I do try to eat healthy for the most part. But do we truly know what’s in some of this stuff we consume?

The image “http://www.menshealth.com/eatthis/images/etntcover.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

I want to thank Ma for sending this to me via email. I figured I’d share it with folks who may not have seen it. Make sure you click on the link to the Men’s Heath website and also check out the article below.

Men’s Health – Eat This, Not That! – Best & Worst – What’s are the worst foods?

Dieters beware: These meals chock-full of calories, fat
By Don Mauer | Lean and Lovin’ It
4/30/2008

Weighing in at 2,710 calories and 203 grams of fat, Chili’s Awesome Blossom may seem like the worst dietary nightmare any restaurant ever foisted on America’s dining public, but it’s not.

According to Men’s Health magazine’s Matt Goulding, Outback Steakhouse’s Aussie cheese fries with ranch dressing and their 2,900 calories and 182 fat grams are so evilly conceived he named them “The Worst Food in America.”

To combat those delicious demons Goulding suggests starting a meat at Chili’s with a side item: garlic and lime grilled shrimp. He also noted that starting any restaurant meal with a higher protein appetizer helps diminish hunger, especially since many restaurants still serving overloaded entree portions.

For a meal-starter at Outback he’d head for the seared Ahi tuna or shrimp on the barbie. Since restaurants still don’t reveal how much trans fats are in their fryers, it’s best to steer clear of deep-fried appetizers or entrees.

Goulding didn’t stop with just those two diet-busters. He revealed what remained on his “20 Worst Foods in America.” Here’s a few highlights.

McDonald’s Chicken Selects Premium Breast Strips: It still amazes me how a restaurant can take a high protein, low-fat piece of chicken breast and turn it into a mealtime nightmare. Goulding ranks the Chicken Selects Premium Breast Strips with creamy ranch sauce as fast food’s worst chicken meal. Just five pieces bring 830 calories (60 percent from fat) and 55 fat grams (4.5 grams trans fat) to the table.

On The Border’s Stacked Nachos Those nachos arrive with a stunning 2,740 calories (54.5 percent from fat) and 166 fat grams. Do the math and you’ll find that’s almost 6 ounces of fat. Not sufficiently insulting; On the Border adds a hard-to-ignore 5,280 milligrams of sodium. Aye carrumba.

Macaroni Grill’s Spaghetti and Meatballs. Spaghetti seems like a somewhat benign entree since it’s just pasta and red sauce. That’s not Macaroni Grill’s view, since its version with meat sauce brings a whopping 2,430 calories (a full day’s worth for an average man) and 128 fat grams (50 percent more daily fat than recommended) to the dinner table. La mia qualità! (My goodness!)

Goulding suggests ordering that same entrée as a lunch portion, with regular tomato sauce; doing so slashes the calories in half.

P.F. Chang’s Pork lo Mein. A simple pork lo mein (sliced pork with noodles and veggies) would seem to be a fair restaurant choice if you’re watching your meal’s calories and fat and without the nutrition facts, you could blindly order some at P. F. Chang’s. However, that would be a huge mistake since its version of this popular Asian entrée serves up 1,820 calories (62.8 percent from fat) and 127 fat grams.

Instead, Goulding suggests opting for the Singapore Street Noodles at 570 calories or Moo Goo Gai Pan or Ginger Chicken and Broccoli each with 660 calories.

To see what else landed on Goulding’s list head to http://www.menshealth.com/eatthis/20worst.html. (linked above)

Be prepared to be surprised.

We really need to take care of ourselves folks. We really do…

I never did like Karl Malone

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/magazine/new/karl_malone_1988.jpg

I can’t tell you why I didn’t like him, I just didn’t. It wasn’t that he played for the Utah Jazz or that he was Black redneck dude with a Jheri curl who drove tractor trailers. I dunno what it was, something just rubbed me the wrong way about this cat.

Edit: Through a quick email exchange with my man Mr. Wyatt, I was reminded of one reason we didn’t like ‘The Mailman’. Ole Karl was hatin’ on Magic when he was thinking about coming back to play after he made the announcement about having HIV. Here’s the NY Times story as well for those who don’t recall the negative comments he made.

BASKETBALL; Johnson’s Return to League Isn’t Welcomed by Some

In all seriousness, isn’t it strange how you can really dislike a person, but you never know why. Then you find out something about that person that makes you go, “Yeah, I knew I aint like that dude”. This right here… this right here just shows how trife that dude was.

The Buffalo News: Allen Wilson: Dad Karl Malone a footnote in Demetrius Bell’s life

COMMENTARY
Dad Karl Malone a footnote in Demetrius Bell’s life

If you’re a fan of NBA great Karl Malone, you might change your mind when you start reading this column.

If you never heard of Buffalo Bills rookie offensive tackle Demetrius Bell, you’ll be rooting for him when I tell you his story.

Bell was a seventh-round draft pick and two-year starter at Northwestern State, the same Louisiana school that produced cornerback Terrence McGee.

Bell is the son of Malone, but the Mailman had no role in Bell’s success except passing along athletic genes.

The two have had very little contact during Bell’s life. His mother, Gloria Bell, reportedly was only 13 years old and Malone a college sophomore at Louisiana Tech when Demetrius was born. Malone might have served jail time had her family asked the district attorney to file criminal charges.

Bell didn’t even know Malone was his father until after graduating from high school. When they finally met, Malone told the 18-year-old Bell it was too late to be his father, and that Bell would have to “earn his money on his own.”

In a 1998 story in the Salt Lake (Utah) Tribune, Gloria Bell said, “Demetrius is ashamed that his dad doesn’t claim him. But I’ve told him it is not his fault.”

Malone also fathered twins while in high school. One of them is WNBA star Cheryl Ford. It took years to claim the twins, and now he and his wife, Kay, fully accept them as part of their family.

But what about Demetrius? Doesn’t he deserve the same measure of love and recognition?

I can certainly relate to Bell’s experience. I didn’t meet my father until after my 40th birthday. Our separation was under different circumstances, but I can imagine how difficult it must have been for Bell not having a connection with the man partly responsible for his existence. At least my father and I have a relationship now.

As a first-time father, I can’t understand how any man could turn his back on his own blood. There’s a word for that, and it’s appropriate: Deadbeat.

Fortunately for Bell, he’s doing just fine without Malone. Bell has clearly moved on with his life.

“All of that’s behind me right now,” Bell said during a conference call Sunday. “I feel good I made it this far. Nothing against him, but I feel good at this time. If he would’ve been there, yeah, it would’ve been good. But if not, it’s even better. Everything is a plus right now.”

Bell has come a long way as a football player in a short time. His high school didn’t have a football team, so he focused on basketball and was good enough to earn a scholarship to Northwestern State. He played in 88 games, with six starts, and was one of four Division I athletes to play basketball and football last season.

Bell didn’t play offensive tackle until three weeks before the 2006 season opener at Kansas. That was the first of his 22 consecutive starts over the last two years.

Whether Bell will stick with the Bills remains to be seen. Seventh-round picks are the long shots on a preseason roster. But a player of his athletic ability deserves a good look.

“I’ve still got room for everything,” Bell said. “I think my strongest part is pass blocking. But I’m getting stronger by the moment. That’s a plus on my stopping the bull rush. Run-blocking is always getting better when I’m adding bulk and getting stronger. And technique- wise, it’s all about the coach teaching me his technique or what technique he wants. I think it’s all on the upside.”

Here’s hoping Bell has a long and prosperous NFL career. He might never be as great in his sport as Malone was in his, but Bell has already surpassed his father as a man.

awilson@buffnews.com

I don’t know if Demetrius Bell is gonna make the Bill squad. However even for a brotha I don’t know, I wish him the best in his future endeavors. The last sentence from Allen Wilson’s column says it all….

Booed by a bunch of kids

Aiiight look, everyone who knows me is aware that I love kids. I have 3 nieces who I love dearly and always enjoy playing with them. Take Your Child To Work Day is another story. I get somewhat annoyed this one day out of the year when parents bring their children, nieces, nephews, cousins, etc to work with them. I always end up employed at jobs that have special programs for kids and thus I’m always needed for something media or IT related. My last job, they let the kids tour the TV studio. The job before that one, they let the kids into the server room. This time around, they wanted to use of my training rooms to show kids movies on the 3 projector screens and to play games on the 10 PC’s. I call it my training room because I’m in charge of that room and the 18 other state of the art conference rooms in this building as well as other aspects of multimedia and production. Now of course I don’t get a heads up from HR til like a few days beforehand. So Monday they drop the bomb on me for Thursday’s event. So I do a quick run through on Tuesday with the folks running things and they appeared to be comfortable with the room. They tell me that they expect about 60 kids to come on the actual day and I’m sure you could’ve seen the joy on my face.

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/training.jpg
yes… I do occasionally watch ESPN in my training room during the work day 🙂

Thursday rolls around and I head into work around 9:30am as usual. My tech get there at 7:30am, so he had the pleasure of getting them all set-up. I walk past the auditorium and see all the kids gathered there. There were an abundance of snacks outside the auditorium, but I passed on them. Yeah, I passed on donuts and other sweet pastries. Kinda heard even saying that I did that one. I’m tryna cut back and get in shape ya know. Anyway, 10am rolls around and about 20 kids head down to my training room. Now the folks who coordinated said that there would only be like 12 at a time. Ooooops, big mistake. Not enough computers for each kid. I came back to my office and eventually they figured it out somehow with the assistance of my tech and other employees who donated laptops. I had work to do and couldn’t spend my entire morning dealing with that nonsense.

At lunch time they brought the kids back into the auditorium and served them pizza ordered from some spot in DC. I should know the name of the spot for future reference cuz I was tearin’ it up!!! When I went into the auditorium, the ages of the kids seated at the time were like 5-8. One of the HR folks asked me of I could put something on the projection screens for the kids and I figured I’d be nice and provide them some entertainment. I threw on Nickelodeon and didn’t give it a second thought. I came back up to my office and had like 3 calls and a number of emails complaining about what was on. I called another one of my techs and told him to handle it since we was down there. He put it on Cartoon Network. I immediately got a call from a co-worker saying that she doesn’t allow her 3 kids to watch Cartoon Network. I was like WTH is up with this!!!?? I aint got time to play TV Guide for these youngins. So I told my tech to switch back to Nickelodeon which happened to be playing Dora the Explorer at that time.I walked back downstairs from my office, walked into the auditorium and all of a sudden I hear “There he is y’all…” coming from one of the parents (a co-worker of mine). I start to hear loud boos and chants from the kids of “No more Dora… No more Dora”. Now, don’t really think I was really hurt or anything, but all that nonsense was unnecessary. When I was in there, the ages of the kids were in the younger bracket, so I threw on Nickelodeon. I didn’t realize that there would be teenagers in there shortly thereafter. After I told my tech to throw it on the Cartoon Network, I didn’t expect a rack of parents to get all sideways about it. I pulled the 3 primary organizers aside and told them that next time they need to agree on a DVD to be played for the kids or relevant entertainment in the auditorium. They’re lucky I aint put it on ESPN fa real. Eventually we found Scooby Doo on some channel and everyone was (appeared to be) happy.

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/auditorium.jpg
Scooby Doo calmed the angry crowd

Fast forward to 4 hours later in our reception room where they had the closing session for the kids. They gave them certificates and prizes, along with refreshments. I’m sitting in my office monitoring the event cuz I have cameras down there where I can see everything. These bad lil youngins were grabbing my mics off the podium messin’ around and what not. Those mics cost $700 a piece. Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannn!!! I jetted downstairs and took the mics from their hands and asked where there parents were. Ya know what these 2 lil waterhead bammas did… they kicked me and starting pulling on my shirt. I aint never seen these kids before today and I was straight stunned that they aint care about nothin’. I’m looking around at all these adults who think it’s funny. Not one of the chaperones bothered to help me flee from this barrage of bad kids. The minute their parents showed up, I realized why. Always the ghetto folks who work here and their bad kids. You know both of them were Black too. I should’ve said something to them, but those who know me know that I either remain silent or go off. I just let it slide. Come to the office to get some work done and end up babysitting.

Hopefully none of y’all had crazy experiences at your company’s Take Your Child To Work Day. If you have a bad experience to share, go ahead. Maybe it’ll make me feel better… lol

NBA Playoffs in Full Effect

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/boston3party.gif

Watch out for Lethal Weapon 3… the Boston 3 Party… The PGA Tour… (Pierce, Garnett, Allen) whatever you wish to call those 3 All-Stars pictured above actin’ fool but having fun. I saw this clip a rack of times in the highlights and finally caught it. I figured I’d do take it off the DVR and do a quick capture of it to my laptop. Anyway, you better believe that I’m amped up. Being a Celtics fan hasn’t been easy the past 20 years. You all know how bad my squad was last year and the years previous. But I’ve never once stopped being a true fan. Know that I will be watching every single game like it’s their last. Hopefully they can put an exclamation on what has been an incredible season.

Oh and ummmmm… for the naysayers out there who wanna talk trash about me being a bandwagon fan, check this out. It’s a Jeff Hamilton leather Celtics jacket that I’ve had for over 15 years. Although it’s slightly smaller on me now than it was back in the days and I won’t ever wear it again…. it aint goin’ no where. Dig on that!!!!

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/celts-leather.jpg

How do you see the NBA playoffs & Finals shaking out? You aint even got to ask me. I’d love to see my squad take on the Lakers and bring back that old rivalry.

International Affairs

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/map.jpg

Typical flying time from Washington, DC to Beijing, China is about 14 hours for the 6,940 miles. Well, I made the connection in about 3 minutes. How so you ask? Via IP, of course. Yesterday we had a 4 hour video conference with some folks in China at 9am Thursday their time. With them being 12 hrs ahead of us that meant 9pm Wednesday night for me. 9pm + 4hrs = 1am. Unfortunately I didn’t have the luxury of coming into work later as I sometimes do when working late nights. I was up in the office fairly early yesterday. Early for me is before 8am. Staring down the barrel of a 17+ hour day is not something that I tend to get excited about. I mean, I’ve done it many times in the past when working production projects or touring, but it’s been a while since I recall pulling anything over 12 hours knowingly.

It was all good though. It’s not often that I do international meetings like this. I did one with Melbourne, Australia and one with Buenos Aires, Argentina last year, but mostly 90% of the time it’s to points somewhere in the US. They cool thing was that the folks here laced me up with a hotel room for the night aka morning, so that when it was finally over I didn’t need to drive 40 minutes home. I dunno though, I appreciate the kind gesture but I would’ve easily took the 4 bills they paid for the room for myself and drove home and drove back in the morning. Hell, I might’ve even slept in my car in the parking garage fa real. However I wasn’t given that option.

Came in yesterday, handled business as usual and even got lucky cuz HR brought in Ben & Jerry’s to do a ice cream social for the staff in the afternoon. Ya know I’m a fiend for sweets, so I copped as cup of Mango Sorbet. I didn’t stop there though. I got another one with vanilla ice cream and threw some strawberries on it. But I stashed it in the freezer for later. Did some more work… kinda. Went over to my hotel room around 5:50pm just to check it, but had to be back in the office at 7:30pm for a production meeting. I lounged for like an hour watching ESPN Sportscenter and talked to the wife for a bit. Returned back to the building around 7:15pm and they had some catered food for us. Grubbed down on some cold cut sandwiches and pasta salad and got prepped for the main event.

We made the initial connection to Beijing around 7:45pm. They were beaming our feed into a hotel ballroom with a few hundred people. Yo… their set-up was off the chains. I could see their projection screens, their plasmas, their set-up on banquet tables with flat screens on each one, everything. Being a tech dude, I’m enamored with all that kinda stuff ya know. The initial logistics were kind of confusing at first. We only had one person on our end who truly understood what they were saying over there when speaking Chinese. However their participants who did speak English did a pretty good job of it and were well understood. The meeting kicked off and I assumed my position as the lead tech as always. Grabbed the headphones to check audio, made sure that the video feed was solid and engaged the recorders. That’s all I had to do. Then again, that’s all I ever do. That’s my job. I’mma production cat. You aint think I was gonna be sitting up in front of some cameras and monitors talking for 4 hrs did you? Naw… I’m the behind the scenes dude who is part of a team that makes it all happen. The execs, CEO’s, VP’s are the ones who do all the talking. They just call on me when they need something. I gather my crew and we make it happen.

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/studio4.jpg

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/studio5.jpg

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/studio6.jpg

When all concluded I’d say it was a little after 1am. Did I go straight to the room and hit the sack. You’re crazy. One of the VP’s was so pleased with the video conference that we suggested that we all hit the bar for drinks on him. I, along with the 3 other guys in my crew took him up on that offer. I think we sat in the lobby of the hotel until around 2am or so. Not a long time, but good enough to unwind. Went back to the room, cut on ESPN and laid in the bed looking at NBA Playoff scenarios for about 30 minutes. I then took my butt to sleep. Woke-up around 7:15 with the TV still on. Switched to Fox5 and all these crazy folks were crying and overjoyed talkin’ about how seeing the Pope had changed their life and how today was the best day of their lives and all. I mean, you’d a thought they were little girls screaming and running after Michael Jackson in the ’84 Pepsi commercial. It was crazy. I just shook my head and got up. Did my morning routine and am now sitting in the office as usual. I’m a little tired. I even had coffee this morning… and I NEVER drink coffee.

Weather’s nice, time for exercise… & a cupcake

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/cupcake/6.jpg

Look, I know this is back to back posts about food aiiiight. But this one really isn’t about food. It’s about warm weather, exercise AND sweets. I don’t work too far from Georgetown, so I figured I’d take a lunchtime stroll down M St to grab a bite to eat, enjoy the warm weather and get those muscles going again in my legs. I saw something on the news about this new cupcake spot called Georgetown Cupcake and figured I’d see what it was all about. I checked out the website and saw that they had an abundance of different types of cupcakes. I set out to get at least a half dozen of them. Instantly I saw this vision from my wife looking at me and waving her finger like Dikembe Mutombo. I’m sayin, I was taking a good walk to get em… doesn’t that count for something. I was getting my exercise along the way right?

FAST FORWARD

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/cupcake/1.jpg

I get to this place. It’s on Potomac Street right off of M St. The first thing I saw was the line. I had to do a double take. The sign didn’t say FREE GOVT CHEESE on the awning. It said Georgetown Cupcake and there were a rack of folks patiently waiting to get their sugar fix. Now I was in the unenviable position of actually having to wait with everybody else. I couldn’t hustle my way out of this one. Well, I probably could’ve but I choose to enjoy the weather and the scenery of Georgetown students in the line. I must’ve waited about 15 minutes outside before I got into the spot.

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/cupcake/2.jpg

Now maybe I’m just from the old school, but what I heard next almost made my ears bleed. A sistah that was in front of me, well a young Black lady (most likely a G-Town student) asked the craziest question. She asked the lady at the counter what Red Velvet was. Hold up shawty… you don’t know what Red Velvet is??? Stop playin’. I wanted to ask her where she was from (Iowa, Nebraska, Vermont maybe), but I’d a been ghetto about it and there were no other Black folks around. Thus, I let it slide with only a slight “Are you serious” look at her.

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/cupcake/3.jpg

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/cupcake/4.jpg

After a rack of folks got their orders filled and yes there were a rack of folks in there, I placed mine. 2 Red Velvets, 1 Coconut, 1 Coconut Chocolate, 1 Key Lime and 1 Vanilla. Hey hey, these are all for me aiiight. I’m sayin’, if I was going to get my sweet fix on, I had to cop some for the wife too. The damage… $16.50. Wow!!! That’s twice as much as I generally pay at Costco’s bakery and 1/2 of the total cupcake count of the typical dozen at that price. These joints better be good. I don’t eat chocolate that much since it gives me migraines, so I’ve make sure the wife gets the chocolate coconut one and whatever else she wants from the box. But rest assure that I will be eating that red velvet cupcake. That’s not real chocolate right? I mean, it’s red. That makes me feel better when popping that Excedrin Migraine after devouring red velvet anything. I’m over here giving myself flashbacks of a slice of red velvet cake from Amy Ruth’s in Harlem. Now that… that was probably the best red velvet cake I ever had that wasn’t home made from grandma or someone down south.

http://www.chocolatecityweb.com/BlogPics/Apr2008/cupcake/5.jpg

For those of y’all in warm weather areas… enjoy it. Get some exercise and keep that sugar low. Aiiiight.

Oh yeah, the walk was good too….. much needed exercise for the kid.

Work Snacks

Aiiiight… I’m really bored. I asked myself “Do I got one more day without an entry or do I blog about something just to pass the time”. Well, here’s the answer. I did a quick inventory of what foods I have in my office, at my desk and in the cabinet around my desk and came up with all of this. My office looks like a 7-Eleven at times… if you open the cabinet next to my desk right now you’ll find:

(does quick look)

-a pack of Craisins
-5 bottles of Vitamin Water
-a Kit Kat
-2 packs of microwave popcorn
-3 V8’s
-pack of freeze dried strawberries
-2 granola bars
-3 cans of fruit cocktail
-2 tins of Altoids
-6 packets of Crystal Light powder
-box of cashews
-box of smoked almonds
-2 small packs of Famous Dave’s BBQ Sauce
-bottle of Lemon-Ginger Echinacea juice
-can of Campbell’s soup
-bottle of Trader Joe’s Mojito beverage

Don’t even ask me what I got in the fridge/freezer up in here…. I got enough to survive a week at least.

So folks… what snacks do YOU have in your office and at your desk at the workplace. I’m talking about stuff that strictly belongs to you.

Coincidence??? I think not…

Yo… I’m over here dying. I’m glad the little girl is okay, but the similarities in this story cannot be ignored…. they just can’t be. A-Rod and the Yankees better be careful next time they go to Boston. Oh yeah, for future blog and message board purposes, this picture screams OWNED!!!! lol

An omen? Hawk attacks girl with a familiar-sounding name at Fenway

A certain New York Yankee slugger should beware: A student taking a tour of Fenway Park today was attacked by a red-tailed hawk that swooped off its nest, drawing blood from the girl’s scalp.

Her name: Alexa Rodriguez. Her age: 13, the same jersey number the Yankee third baseman wears.

“She’s fine, a little shaken, but OK,” said Vince Jennetta, a teacher who chaperoned Rodriguez’s class trip from Memorial Boulevard Middle School in Bristol, Conn.

The eighth-grader was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and treated for the small scratch on her scalp.

The 3 1/2-pound hawk has been building nests at Fenway since 2002, but has always been chased out before opening day so she and her mate could find a new home, said Tom French, assistant director of MassWildlife.

This spring the raptor used a brown-knit cap and twigs from trees on Yawkey Way to build a nest on a green overhang near the press booth above home plate. She laid a brown-speckled egg last week, but it rolled off the nest, wasn’t properly incubated, and was no longer viable, French said.

Wildlife officials removed the egg and the nest after the hawk’s attack, which was captured by veteran Globe photographer John Tlumacki.

Could it be an omen for Yankee Alex Rodriguez, who once got in a glove-in-the-face scuffle with Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek at Fenway in 2004?

“I deal in science, not mythology,” French said, refusing to make any baseball predictions based on the feisty hawk. “Although you could say she has done a good job protecting her home plate.”
